Lofty Listening
On this page we want to bring you some music, interviews and other essential Loft listening. This page will expand over time so do check in now and again to see what else has been added. To start with we are excited to bring you part one of a previously unheard 2000 Interview with David conducted by Chris Menist. For your listening pleasure we also have a seven hour set from David musically hosting - recorded at the first ever London Loft party at 93 Feet East back in 2001. And as if that wasn’t enough, one of the gorgeous Worldwide FM Loft Specials hosted by Colleen. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

David Mancuso and Colleen Murphy produced two volumes of the David Mancuso Presents The Loft compilation for Nuphonic (Volume 1 in 1999 and Volume 2 in 2000). At that time, writer Chris Menist travelled to New York City to interview David for a documentary Colleen hosted on XFM’s ‘London Xpress’. Until now, the entire interview has never been made available. Colleen has produced the interviews into two podcasts with music and we are pleased to present the first episode below. But first a bit from Chris…
"As a teenage music fan growing up in the UK, the various sub-cultures of New York had always loomed large, starting with early hip-hop from the mid-80s onwards. I started going to clubs more and my music taste broadened outwards, so to hear about figures such as Larry Levan and David Mancuso seemed inevitable. What drew me towards David's story though was the communal ethos of his Loft parties, as well as his care towards his music choices. The diversity of what got played also intrigued me, so in the summer of 2000 as the Nuphonic label was preparing a second Loft compilation, I jumped at the chance to write the notes. Looking for a new approach to what had been published already, we agreed a tour around the original sites where David had hosted his parties, with David discussing his memories and feelings as we went to each place, could shed a new light on this pivotal time.
I hadn't listened to these interviews again until relatively recently, and in retrospect it feels like something more akin to an oral history. It's funny hearing my slightly awkward 20-something self, trying to navigate his first trip to New York! What is captured below is the full unedited recording of the two afternoons we went around New York together, complete with David's recollections and interactions with people in the neighbourhoods, some of whom remember the parties. It holds a lot of happy memories which feels good to share with you all now.”

Going back to our roots
The first ever London incarnation of The Loft was the launch party for the second volume of David Mancuso presents The Loft released in October 2000 on Nuphonic Records. It was held on 7th May 2001 at 93 Feet East in London’s Brick Lane. Here we present the full seven hours of that historic evening for your delectation. Enjoy!
Looking back….
Here we have an interview from 2021 with David Hill of Nuphonic Records and Colleen looking back 20 years after that landmark inaugural London Loft Party at 93 East in May 2001. David musically hosted for over six hours to a crowd who hung on his every selection, on a sound system that, for many who heard it, changed the way they thought about music and dancing. With David’s permission, his set and the sounds of the dancers were recorded to DAT, then mixed and stored on archival grade gold CD-R. The recordings were recently unearthed and David's full set has been restored in all its glory.
David Hill and Colleen discuss how the compilation and the party came together, as well as from some of the guests who were on the dancefloor on that night. Then get ready for the full 7 hour experience, with no talking, no jingles, just David Mancuso musically hosting a very special party, where everyone felt welcome...
